House Muthaiga Nairobi

The site on which this super spacious 1400 square metre house is situated in the prestigious and lushly landscaped suburb of Muthaiga in Nairobi, Kenya. The site slopes gently towards the adjacent small indigenous river and tropical forest. The client’s brief was to design a contemporary family home that offers the signature KMMA indoor outdoor flow. The house had to offer 5 ensuite bedrooms, extensive recreation facilities including a home theatre, a gym with sauna, a collectors wine cellar and tasting room, a self-catering guest suite, extensive staff quarters as well as a large level garden suitable to play cricket and soccer.

A panhandle driveway leads the way through a series of contemporary gates to the entrance forecourt of the house, which reveals the front facade. The entrance itself is highlighted by a floating steel and timber “porte-cochère” which cantilevers above the grey granite entrance stepping stones bisecting a water feature. The entrance doors are clad in copper. The configuration of the house makes the most of the exceptional width of the site and is arranged as a pair of asymmetrical wings which jut out towards the forest with a central section further set back. This allows the whole house to enjoy the views out towards the forest.

The entrance level comprises the main entertainment and living areas, including the formal lounge, study, home theatre, dining kitchen, breakfast area and family area which all open onto an extensive and spacious covered patio area complete with external bar and barbecue areas. These flow seamlessly onto the local Mvuli timber pool deck all set on structured horizontal planes cantilevered toward the adjacent forest. The floor of this entire level is clad in a large format Italian porcelain tile. The formal lounge, which is situated on the East side, features a ceiling height of more than 5 metres, oak strip clad ceiling panels and a feature wall clad with silver leaf wallpaper. In the centre of the entrance level, the guest bathroom/powder room, the home theatre and the spacious dining area is located. The West wing of the house, is the largest wing and extends further towards the forest to accommodate the kitchen as well as the breakfast area and the spacious family room area.

Via the West wing, a stair leads down to the lower ground entertainment level. This includes a large playroom, the gym, a sauna and a wine cellar/tasting room which offers space for more than 2000 bottles of wine. The lower level furthermore includes a guest apartment with its own living area, bedroom and marble clad bathroom. This entire level is able to open fully to the expansive level garden.

The first floor is accessed by taking the cantilever timber and concrete stair up from the ground level. This level houses all 5 ensuite bedrooms and a casual TV lounge.

Like many upmarket houses in Nairobi, the house is able to be entirely self-sufficient with its own diesel generator, solar heating and built-in fresh water tanks.

Client Experience
My favourite part of the house’s design is how the modern features fit and embrace the natural materials used. This results into a modern yet homely house! There is nothing I would change about the design, after having lived in the house for a while. It was a privilege to deal with honest and true professionals. I would highly recommend KMMA to anyone.
