House Kloof Bantry Bay
Set on a magnificent half acre plot, positioned below prestigious Kloof Road, this new 3 storey, 5 bedroomed house enjoys unlimited views out to the Ocean, over Bantry Bay and back to Table Mountain and Lions Head looming behind the house. The brief was to create a house that would function both as an entertainers paradise as well as being a warm and welcoming family home. To this end, the house actually has two pools. A shallower rim flow lap pool is suspended off the main living level on the first floor and a deep and spacious family play pool is set onto the ground/lower level, leading off from the main bedroom and family room.
A driveway leads down to the house from Kloof Road and much thought was given to create a dramatic sense of arrival and allowing the views both back toward the mountain and out towards the Sea, to be appreciated, from the very transparent entrance hall element which has a spectacular triple volume and also visually connects this upper entrance and guest bedroom level to the main living level down below.
The main living level is a largely open plan space, separated only by carefully placed laser cut timber screens and is unique in that it opens not only to the large patio and suspended lap pool, which is on the sea-facing side of the house, but also to the secluded outdoor sunken lounge area that has been carved into the mountainside at the back of the house. This gives a feeling of connection between mountain and Sea. The living area is able to open out to the pool area through floor to ceiling sliding doors and offers a 20 metre wide opening, uninterrupted by structure, that we have never achieved before and enhances the indoor outdoor flow and sense of connection to the terrace.
The imported Italian kitchen is both modernist and minimalist and complements the simple but warm palette of crisply detailed materials used: grey granite tiles, oak timber, glass and aluminium including true bespoke aluminium sun-shading elements which serves as a sunscreen and an aesthetic element.
A glass lift imported from Italy connects the 3 levels both physically and as a unifying circulation element with a timber clad staircase that wraps the vertical shaft. With concealed air conditioning, home automation, water harvesting and filtration, solar heating and many other “green technology” elements, this house is not only a contemporary masterpiece, but also a sustainable and sensible home with a minimal carbon footprint, for the owners to enjoy fully.
The Western side upper level guest suite opens onto its own expansibe patio and has an oak clad sloped ceiling to the underside of the roof slope which enhances the spatial feeling of the room and together with extensive oak panelling provides warmth and a feeling of being connected to nature while still enjoying the magnificent sea vistas.
A 20 m long rimflow lap pool provides a visual connection to the Ocean vistas and creates a focus for the main living and entertainment level with its built -in barbecue and seating area to the one side and outdoor bar area to the other.
